Scripture Reading: Jeremiah 17:9-11

Memory Verse

“He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered” (Proverbs 28:26)

heart and a stoneWhen it comes to taking important decisions, people often say “follow your heart”. Beloved friend, this is dangerous! The heart can be very deceitful. It has deceived many in the past into committing crime and it’s still doing so today. Jeremiah 17:9 says “The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked: who can know it?”

Man’s heart is very deceptive because it responds to what you feed it with. A heart that is fed with immoral thought will lead his owner to fornication and adultery. If you allow your heart to be fed with lies on any topic, when the time comes take important decision on related topic, your heart will pour out lies for you – it is garbage in garbage out. Ask those who got themselves into trouble and latter regretted it, many will tell you that they followed their heart.

Are you a parent? Beware of the foolishness in the heart of children. I often heard many parents telling their kids to follow their heart when it comes to buying an item or choosing a career. It is good to allow children to do what they love but not in all things. The scripture says in Proverbs 22:15 “Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him”. As Christians, let us learn to guide and teach our Children and not leave them at the mercy of their school teachers (Proverbs 22:6). If the heart of adults can deceive them, how much more the hearts of the little children?

Finally, the heart is prone to pride and the scripture pointed out that everyone that is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord (Proverbs 16:5). We don’t often realise it when our heart is proud. We trust so much in our heart until we are confronted with the rebuke of the Holy Spirit. Beloved trust not in your heart! Befriend Holy Spirit and let the word of God be your guide in decision making.
